Clean Label Capsules: What They Are and Why They Matter

What Does "Clean Label" Mean?

Clean label is not a legal definition but a consumer-driven movement toward products with shorter ingredient lists, recognisable ingredients, and minimal processing. For capsule products, clean label typically means: no artificial colours or dyes, no TiO2 (titanium dioxide), no synthetic gelling agents or processing aids, plant-based or naturally sourced materials, and clear, honest labelling.

The clean label trend has accelerated significantly in recent years, driven by consumer awareness, social media transparency, and regulatory changes like the EU TiO2 ban. A growing share of consumers now check ingredient labels before purchasing supplements.

Which Capsule Materials Are Clean Label?

Pullulan capsules are produced through natural fermentation, require no synthetic processing aids, contain no TiO2, and result in a naturally translucent capsule shell with excellent barrier properties. The ingredient list is simply: pullulan, water.

HPMC capsules can be clean label depending on their formulation. Standard HPMC capsules contain gelling agents such as gellan gum or carrageenan, which some clean-label advocates prefer to avoid. However, newer "gelling agent-free" HPMC capsules are now available from select manufacturers.

Gelatine capsules have a simple ingredient list (gelatine, water) and could be considered clean label in terms of minimal processing. However, they are not suitable for the plant-based market segment, which heavily overlaps with clean-label consumers.

Consumer Expectations

Clean-label consumers typically expect: transparency about sourcing and manufacturing, natural or minimally processed ingredients, absence of controversial additives, environmental responsibility, and certifications (organic, non-GMO, vegan).

For capsule products, this translates to specific demands: the capsule shell itself should have a clean ingredient list, the overall product should avoid unnecessary excipients, and the packaging should communicate the clean-label story clearly.

Formulation Considerations

Formulating clean-label capsule products requires attention to every component. Beyond the capsule shell, consider your fillers, flow agents, and lubricants. Traditional excipients like magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and talc are increasingly questioned by clean-label consumers.

Alternatives include: rice hull concentrate (flow agent), organic rice flour (filler), and vegetable-sourced magnesium stearate. Some formulators are moving to capsule-only products with no excipients at all, using direct-fill techniques.

Market Impact

Products positioned as clean label typically command a price premium in the supplement market. More importantly, they often see stronger consumer loyalty and better repeat purchase rates. Retailers are increasingly dedicating shelf space to clean-label products, and online marketplace algorithms favour products with clean ingredient lists.

For B2B capsule buyers, offering clean-label capsule options can be a significant competitive differentiator. Contract manufacturers report growing demand for pullulan and HPMC capsules from brands seeking to reformulate existing products.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official clean-label certification?
There is no single global "clean label" certification, but several third-party certifications support clean-label claims: Non-GMO Project Verified, organic certifications, and various "free from" certifications. The Clean Label Project offers testing and certification for contaminants.
Can I switch to clean-label capsules without changing my formulation?
In many cases, yes. If your current formulation uses standard HPMC or gelatine capsules, switching to pullulan capsules is often a straightforward drop-in replacement. Stability testing is recommended but full reformulation is typically not required.
