Acid-Resistant HPMC Capsules

Plant-based capsules that pass through the stomach intact. No enteric coating needed — acid resistance is built into the shell.

  • Built-in acid resistance
  • Protects acid-sensitive ingredients
  • 100% plant-based
  • Low moisture content

Acid-resistant HPMC capsules are designed to pass through the stomach intact and dissolve in the intestine. This protects acid-sensitive active ingredients from degradation by stomach acid and ensures they reach the intestine, where absorption is most effective.

Eurokapsule supplies acid-resistant HPMC capsules. Available in sizes 00, 0 and 1, with standard transparent capsules stocked in our temperature-controlled warehouses.

Built-in delayed release — no enteric coating

Conventional delayed release requires an enteric coating applied to the filled capsule or tablet in an extra processing step. Acid-resistant capsules build that protection into the shell material itself: the capsule stays intact in the acidic environment of the stomach (pH 1–3) and dissolves in the higher pH of the intestine (pH 6–7). No coating step, no coating solvents and a shorter ingredient declaration.

Ideal applications

Acid-resistant HPMC capsules are specifically designed for:

  • Probiotics and live cultures — delivers viable bacteria past stomach acid into the intestine, where they colonise and function
  • Digestive enzymes — protects enzyme activity from acid denaturation, ensuring functional enzymes reach the duodenum
  • Collagen peptides — protected from acid degradation and released in the intestine
  • Sensitive botanical extracts — curcumin, resveratrol and other polyphenols that may degrade under acidic conditions
  • pH-sensitive actives — any ingredient whose efficacy depends on intestinal (rather than gastric) release

Certifications

Our acid-resistant HPMC capsules and their manufacturer hold the following certifications:

  • Halal certified
  • Kosher certified

Manufacturer quality certifications: cGMP, FSSC 22000, ISO 9001

Compliance

These capsules also meet the following compliance and free-from standards:

  • BSE/TSE free
  • GMO free

Frequently asked questions

How do acid-resistant capsules work?
The capsule is formulated with a special shell formulation that remains intact in the acidic environment of the stomach (pH 1–3) but dissolves in the higher pH of the intestine (pH 6–7). No enteric coating is needed — the acid resistance is built into the capsule material itself.
What is the difference between acid-resistant capsules and enteric-coated capsules?
Enteric coating is an additional coating applied to a standard capsule or tablet after filling. Acid-resistant capsules achieve the same result through the capsule shell formulation itself, eliminating the coating step. This simplifies manufacturing and reduces production costs.
Can I use acid-resistant capsules for all formulations?
Acid-resistant capsules are specifically designed for actives that benefit from intestinal release. For general formulations where gastric release is acceptable or preferred, standard vegetable HPMC capsules or gelatine capsules are more cost-effective.
Are acid-resistant capsules the same as delayed release capsules?
Acid-resistant capsules are a type of delayed-release capsule. Instead of an added enteric coating, the delayed release is built into the HPMC shell itself: the capsule stays intact in the stomach and releases its contents in the intestine. The result is the same — intestinal release — without the extra coating step.
Do acid-resistant capsules require special filling equipment?
No. Acid-resistant HPMC capsules run on standard capsule filling machines with the same excellent machine compatibility as our standard vegetable HPMC capsules. No process changes are needed — and the coating step required for enteric-coated products is eliminated entirely.
